It's been years since 2008 and the Trip to Japan It is still a favorite of the blog (so much that we returned). There are hundreds of questions that come to us annually and, among them, many referring to the itineraries and routes in Japan that each one designs, prepares and plans according to their available days. That is why, finally, we have encouraged ourselves to make a small compilation to which you can refer although every day you have more specialized blogs in this wonderful country that are well worth a look. UPDATED 2018/2019

However, Paula always insists that she wants to get to know Japan better, so it won't take long to return. Maybe next year?

5 itineraries of Japan between 7, 14 and 21 days so you can adapt yours

Some recommendations before starting to design your itinerary

The following tips are very personal and depend on the particular tastes of each person, the pace of travel and preferences. You already know that we have the philosophy that a trip must go "embedding", even leaving the moments for the last part of the trip but ... what are they? Perhaps you are more of temples than of "futuristic" cities or "experiences in theme restaurants." So, take this as a very subjective opinion but that can serve as a base reference. Some recommendations:

- A trip to Japan can be started and ended by many points. We We always recommend entering through Osaka and leaving through Tokyo to optimize time. KLM and Air FranceWith whom we fly, they allow this multipath option at the same prices as if you entered and left through the same city.

-Go 7 or 21 days, Tokyo and Kyoto and some of their nearby excursions have to be part of this itinerary. Kyoto requires a minimum of 3 days and Tokyo another 3-4 days.

- Among the star visits near both cities, we usually recommend as essential Nara, Himeji, Hiroshima and Miyajima from Kyoto and Nikko, Kamakura and Yokohama from TokyoFor a first trip.

- Always value Buy the Japan Rail Pass in advance (online is now possible) for 7 or 14 days. Usually compensate if you make small numbers although we will make a dedicated article.

- Among all, the accommodations that we liked the most were:
+ A Ryokan in front of the famous island Tori in Miyajima with a romantic dinner in the same room
+ A Familiar and cozy ryokan in Kanazawa very close to gardens, samurai neighborhood, etc ... with breakfast included.
+ Thetraditional Japanese style room of an old house in Takayama
+ The Private onsen on the terrace of our own room on a ryokan whim with true charm in Hakone

- After two trips, the The best options (also cheaper) that we have found for the main cities are:
+ The picturesque Japanese style room with futons from Kyoto for 46,220 yen for the 6 nights we were
+ The famous among Spaniards Hotel Edoya from Tokyo for 60,060 yen for 6 nights although we loved it on our second trip onFukudaya Hotel, something more expensive but 10 minutes from Shibuya

- Once you have decided your days and provisional itinerary, buy your flight and do not forget take out travel insurance in the following 48-72 hours for the validity of the cancellation coverage if you choose it

- You have a list of useful for when you have decided your days and itinerary

Route of a trip to Japan between 7 and 10 days

It is the shortest route we would consider in Japan and would use the bases of Kyoto and Tokyo to move.

DAY 1 Arrival from Spain - Osaka - Kyoto
DAY 2 Kyoto
DAY 3 Kyoto
DAY 4 Kyoto (Nara option)
DAY 5 Kyoto - Tokyo
DAY 6 Tokyo
DAY 7 Tokyo
DAY 8 Tokyo (Kamakura option - Yokohama)
DAY 9 Tokyo (Nikko option)
DAY 9 Tokyo
DAY 10 Tokyo - Departure to Spain

This option only requiresbook 7-day Japan Rail Pass (IMPORTANT: although it is sold on several platforms, we recommend you take it in the official seller since the price difference can be considerable) and Accommodation 4 nights in Kyoto and 6 nights in Tokyo (* If they were 7 days we would remove 2 in Tokyo and 1 in Kyoto)

Route of a trip to Japan of 2 weeks / 14 days

Adding 4 days to the route with respect to the previous one will allow us to choose between two fundamental options (unless you have a particular predilection): make the route of the Japanese Alps or go to southern Kyoto in search of Miyajima's spirituality . Between them, we always recommend the latter

DAY 1 Arrival from Spain - Osaka - Kyoto
DAY 2 Kyoto
DAY 3 Kyoto
DAY 4 Kyoto (Nara option)
DAY 5 Kyoto
DAY 6 Kyoto - Okayama - Hiroshima
DAY 7 Hiroshima - Miyajima
DAY 8 Miyajima - Himeji - Kyoto (Kobe option)
DAY 9 Kyoto - Tokyo
DAY 10 Tokyo
DAY 11 Tokyo (Kamakura option - Yokohama)
DAY 12 Tokyo (Nikko option)
DAY 13 Tokyo
DAY 14 Tokyo - Departure to Spain

This option only requiresBook Japan Rail Pass 7 or 14 days (to be valued) and Accommodation 6 nights in Kyoto, 1 night in Hiroshima, 1 night in Miyajima and 5 nights in Tokyo

19-day trip to Japan

For us it would be the perfect time if you can afford it. This way I could add both southern Kyoto and the Japanese Alps without any stress

DAY 1 Arrival from Spain - Osaka
DAY 2 Osaka - Kyoto
DAY 3 Kyoto
DAY 4 Kyoto (Nara option)
DAY 5 Kyoto
DAY 6 Kyoto - Okayama - Hiroshima
DAY 7 Hiroshima - Miyajima
DAY 8 Miyajima - Himeji - Kyoto (Kobe option)
DAY 9 Kyoto - Takayama
DAY 10 Takayama - Shirikawago
DAY 11 Shirikawago - Kanazawa
DAY 12 Kanazawa - Tokyo
DAY 13 Tokyo (Hakone option)
DAY 14 Tokyo
DAY 15 Tokyo
DAY 16 Tokyo (Kamakura option - Yokohama)
DAY 17 Tokyo (Nikko option)
DAY 18 Tokyo
DAY 19 Tokyo - Departure to Spain

This option only requiresbook Japan Rail Pass for 14 days (IMPORTANT: remember that there are great price differences between the platform and we recommend you take it with the official seller) and 1 accommodation in Osaka, 5 nights in Kyoto, 1 night in Hiroshima, 1 night in Miyajima, 1 Takayama, 1 Shirikawago, 1 Kanazawa and 7 nights in Tokyo (option 1 in Hakone)

3-week / 21-day trip to Japan

Having 3 weeks the options multiply. If we continue on the basic itineraries line for a first trip on the main island, there are options to include visits to Toyama, Matsumoto, Nagano, Uji, Nagasaki, Hakone, the 5 lakes area and Fuji, Nakasendo route from Magome to Tsumago, ...

Which would we include the previous 19 days? Possibly the Nakasendo route or the 5 lakes area

A 17-day trip to Japan (ours)

And the 17-day one? We have left it for last because It was the one we chose. We think the more balanced for a first trip although you need a little more than 2 weeks to do it.

DAY 1 Arrival from Spain - Osaka - Kyoto
DAY 2 Kyoto
DAY 3 Kyoto
DAY 4 Kyoto - Nara * We went to Osaka (although it was too much)
DAY 5 Kyoto
DAY 6 Kyoto - Okayama - Hiroshima - Miyajima
DAY 7 Miyajima - Himeji - Kobe - Kyoto
DAY 8 Kyoto - Kanazawa
DAY 9 Kanazawa - Shirikawago - Takayama
DAY 10 Takayama - Hakone
DAY 11 Hakone - Tokyo
DAY 12 Tokyo
DAY 13 Tokyo - Nikko - Tokyo
DAY 14 Tokyo-Kamakura-Yokohama-Tokyo
DAY 15 Tokyo
DAY 16 Tokyo
DAY 17 Tokyo - Departure to Spain

What would we have changed? We would not have gone to Hakone to stay one more day in the Japanese Alps and we would have done them the other way around now (Takayama-Shirikawago-Kanazawa) since there is direct bullet train Kanazawa to Tokyo. Perhaps we would also have stayed the first night in Osaka as it is raised in the 19-day

And you, Are you already thinking about a trip to Japan or returning if you have already gone? Paula insists a lot so it would not be surprising if you see us back there sooner rather than later. We accept suggestions for new itineraries and routes!
